Developing the Next Generation of Leaders

On 8 May, 50 participants from the NUS Emerging Leaders Programme took part in MIRAI: Building Amazing Workplaces, AEQLIA’s immersive business simulation focused on leadership, culture and people performance.

The Emerging Leaders Programme supports rising leaders as they make the critical transition from individual contributor to manager. The programme develops capabilities such as emotional and social intelligence, coaching, influence, communication, team leadership and conflict management.

MIRAI was integrated into the programme to give participants an opportunity to move from discussing leadership concepts to experiencing the decisions and trade-offs that leaders face in practice.

Building the Capabilities New Managers Need

The move into management requires a fundamental shift in mindset.

Emerging leaders are no longer responsible only for their own performance. They must learn how to create the conditions for others to perform, grow and stay engaged.

That means learning to navigate questions such as:

  • How do you build trust and psychological safety?
  • How do you balance people needs with business priorities?
  • How do you respond to conflict and disengagement?
  • How do everyday leadership decisions shape team culture?
  • How do you influence performance without relying only on authority?

These are difficult capabilities to develop through theory alone.

Experiencing Leadership Through MIRAI

In MIRAI, participants step into the leadership team of Summit Enterprises, an organisation facing digital disruption, changing employee expectations and growing competitive pressure.

Working in teams, participants make strategic decisions across the employee lifecycle, including talent attraction, onboarding, team development, engagement, retention and advocacy.

Throughout the simulation, they must consider how their choices affect:

  • Employee experience
  • Psychological safety and trust
  • Team engagement
  • Workplace culture
  • Leadership effectiveness
  • Organisational performance

The experience combines immersive storytelling, team-based decision-making, scoring, a leaderboard, analytics and feedback on choices.

This creates a safe environment for participants to test ideas, challenge assumptions and reflect on the kind of leaders they want to become.

Strengthening Leadership Judgement and Awareness

MIRAI helped participants connect the broader themes of the Emerging Leaders Programme with realistic leadership situations.

The experience enabled participants to:

  • Explore the impact of leadership decisions on people and performance
  • Strengthen awareness of culture, trust and psychological safety
  • Practise balancing competing leadership priorities
  • Reflect on their own assumptions and decision-making style
  • Connect employee engagement with wider organisational outcomes
  • Learn from the different perspectives of peers

For the 50 emerging leaders, the simulation helped turn leadership from an abstract concept into something more practical and tangible.

The key takeaway: strong leadership is not only about what leaders know, but about the decisions they make and the environment they create for others.
